Born in Raleigh, North Carolina, Kwame attended high school at Garinger High School in Charlotte, North Carolina. He was the first overall pick in the 2001 NBA draft by the Washington Wizards.
During his rookie season with the Wizards, he became the youngest NBA player to be awarded a Rookie of the Year Award at 19 years and 322 days old.

The career of Kwame Brown
Kwame Brown was the first overall draft pick in 2001 by the Washington Wizards.
His first notable appearance on a basketball court came during his senior year at Glynn Academy (GA), where he averaged 20 points and 15 rebounds per game, leading the school to its first state championship appearance.
At that time, he drew comparisons to Shaquille O’Neal, and it was believed that he had the potential to become one of the greatest players in the NBA.
Unfortunately, Brown’s career never quite reached those lofty expectations. He averaged just over 10 points per game for his career, never averaging more than 14.5 during a season.
In addition, his teams never made the playoffs, and he never made an all-star team.
In fairness to Brown, part of the problem is that he was drafted by a terrible Wizards team. They finished with a record below .500 in 5 out of his 7 seasons there.
In addition, injuries likely played a role in hampering his career. In 2003, he missed 6 weeks with a broken pinky finger. In 2005, he missed 16 games for back problems.
However, Brown did not help himself either.
He was repeatedly cited by coaches and teammates for his lack of motivation and dedication to the game (although he does receive some credit for reportedly changing his diet to avoid further back problems).
He was also criticized for his lack of fundamentals in the post. His free throw shooting in particular was horrific, as he shot under 50% from the line in all but one season.
Education of Kwame Brown
There is no question that Kwame Brown had a difficult upbringing.
However, through the adversity, he was able to find something that drove him to succeed: education. Brown was always a bright student, and his teachers recognized his potential early on.
He attended the University of Nevada, Las Vegas on a basketball scholarship, but eventually transferred to Georgia State to pursue an education degree.
After graduating, Brown has worked as a substitute teacher for low-income schools in Atlanta and is currently enrolled at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education.
“Just because I had bad grades when I was younger doesn’t mean I didn’t love learning,” said Brown. “I want to give kids the same opportunity to learn that I had. Education is the key to success, and I’m committed to helping kids get access to quality education.”
Brown’s drive for education comes from a place of personal experience. He knows what it is like to feel like an outsider, and he wants to make sure that no child ever has to face that reality.
“We accommodate kids with certain learning styles, but not every child learns the same way,” said Brown. “I remember in school I would zone out sometimes when my teacher was talking, and she wouldn’t understand why I didn’t retain information. As an adult, I know that it is because of auditory processing issues. I want to create a learning environment that takes into account different learning styles.”
Brown’s passion for education is evident, and he is committed to making a difference in the lives of children.
He understands the importance of quality education and is working hard to make sure that all kids have access to one. With Brown’s dedication to this cause, there is no doubt that he will be able to make a real difference in the lives of children.
We look forward to following his work at Harvard University.
Achievements of Kwame Brown
About four weeks ago, I posted about Kwame Brown’s passing proficiency in the post-Jordan Bulls era.
There was a decidedly mixed reaction. Some thought it bold and refreshing to break free of conventional wisdom when presented with facts that seem contrary to what is assumed true.
Others just didn’t feel like checking an article that wasn’t written by one of the big three mainstream sports networks.
In the time since then, I’ve decided to take a closer look at Kwame’s career.
The objective is not to present an exhaustive review of all his accomplishments, but to paint a fuller picture of the player he was and the role he played in the NBA.
Hopefully, this will give readers a better idea of his value to the league, and in turn, explain why he could be a fitting addition to a playoff contender.
I’ll start with a look at his illustrious high school resume: three years, three straight state championships, two players of the year awards (Mr. Basketball USA ’99 & Illinois Mr.Basketball ’99).
These accolades earned him a spot in the NBA draft lottery, where he was selected first overall by the Washington Wizards.
In his rookie year, Kwame averaged over 10 points and 7 rebounds per game. For a 20-year-old rookie, those numbers are respectable. The following year, injuries limited him to just 55 games and his PPG dropped from 11.6 to 8.5.
In his third year, a similar pattern emerged: a knee injury early in the season held him to just 38 games and a career-low 5 points per contest. Kwame had lost his step since being drafted, but it wasn’t all bad news.
In his third year, he started 19 games for the Wizards and was on their playoff roster. In those 19 games, he had a True Shooting Percentage of .524, a major improvement from his rookie year where it was a dismal 48.4%.
Brown’s minutes were significant as well: more than 24 per game on average. That increased role caught the attention of several teams who were looking for a big man to add depth in the playoffs.
